Quick answer

A low taper fade keeps length on top and fades the hair short only around the ears and the neckline. Ask for a #1 to #3 taper, starting about an inch above the ear, with 2 to 4 inches left on top.

What is a low taper fade?

A taper shortens the hair gradually as it moves down the head. A low taper keeps that change small and close to the hairline, so most of the side stays at one length. It looks clean without the hard contrast of a skin fade.

It is one of the most requested cuts in shops because it grows out well. Two weeks later it still looks intentional. See our full haircut guide for how it compares with mid and high fades.

What to ask your barber

Use these words in the chair. Show a photo if you have one.

  1. “Low taper, start just above the ear.”This sets where the fade begins.
  2. “Number 1 at the bottom, blend to a 3.”Go to a 0.5 for a sharper finish.
  3. “Leave about three inches on top.”Say if you want it textured or kept long.
  4. “Natural neckline, not squared.”A natural neckline grows out softer.
Barber tip

Ask for the taper to follow your natural hairline at the sideburns. A straight line there ages badly after a week.

Guard numbers explained

Each clipper guard adds about one eighth of an inch.

Guard Length left Where it goes
#0.5 1/16 in Bottom edge for a crisp taper
#1 1/8 in Neckline and around the ear
#2 1/4 in Blend zone
#3 3/8 in Top of the taper

Which face shapes it suits

A low taper works on most faces because it does not change the outline much.

Round faces

Add height on top. A textured quiff above a low taper makes the face look longer.

Oblong faces

Keep the top flatter and a little longer at the front. Avoid extra height.

“A low taper is the safest fade you can ask for. It suits almost everyone.”Marcus Bell, licensed barber

How to style it at home

  • Towel-dry until hair is damp, not wet.
  • Use a pea-sized amount of matte clay for texture.
  • Push the front up and back with your fingers.
  • Finish with a light spray if your hair drops by noon.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a low taper fade last?

It looks sharp for about 2 weeks and still tidy at 3. Book a clean-up every 2 to 3 weeks.

Is a low taper the same as a low fade?

No. A low fade usually goes down to skin across the whole back. A low taper only shortens the edges around the ear and neckline.

Can I get a low taper with curly hair?

Yes. Curly and coily hair hold a taper well. Leave more length on top so the curls keep their shape.
